Did you know that on the two short sides, on the other hand, there were and still are the two main access doors to the arena. They were not used by the spectators, but by the participants in the shows, i.e. the gladiators. The two gates had precise names and roles: the one to the west, called Porta Trionfale, allowed the triumphal entry of the gladiators before the show, and the exit of the very few who managed to survive the battles; the one to the east, called Porta Libitinaria (from Venus-Libitina, the Roman goddess protector of tombs) was used to carry away the bodies of deceased fighters, but also to give access to larger exotic animals (such as elephants or giraffes).
The Roman Colosseum is today the symbol of Rome in the world, and has been considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, becoming a historical and archaeological treasure capable of reminding us of the greatness of the Roman Empire. Did you know that for the opening of the Colosseum a party was organized which lasted 100 days where dozens of gladiators were killed? In 80 AD the Roman Colosseum was inaugurated, after three years of work.
The Roman Forum is a true sanctuary of ancient Rome, where basilicas, temples, the Curia of the Senate, the Tribuna degli Oratori or the Casa dei Vestali were once erected. Today we can only see its ruins, but you will be able to relive its history in each of these magnificent settings.
In the valley of the Roman Forum stands the Hill of the Palatine, where the ruins of the imperial residence are found, the construction of which was started by Augustus and completed by his successors, here it is possible to visit the headquarters, the basilicas, the underground galleries, etc.
